Nike is the
world's largest manufacturer of shoes and apparel. Its name
originated from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. In addition to
its primary line, Nike also markets its products through many
subsidiary brands, such as Jordan Brand, Nike Skateboarding, Nike
Golf, Cole Haan, Hurley International (purchased in 2002),
Converse (purchased in 2003), and Umbro (purchased in 2008).
Origin
Nike was
founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Philip Knight in 1964 under
the name Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS). After introducing its line of
Nike sneakers in 1972, BRS officially changed its name to Nike in
1978. Today, Nike has 700 shops worldwide and has offices located
in 45 countries. Nike's main headquarters is located in Beaverton,
Oregon.
