Adidas
Main-entry: adidas
Pronunciation: \ə'di:dəs\
Function: noun
Adidas is the
largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and the second largest
manufacturer in the world, behind Nike. Aside from it's primary
company, Adidas has three subsidiaries: TaylorMade Adidas,
Rockport, and Reebok (purchased in January 2006). Adidas's
headquarters is located in Herzogenaurach, Germany.
Origin
After
returning from World War I, Adolf "Adi" Dassler began
making his own shoes in his mother's kitchen. In 1924, his brother
Rudolf "Rudi" Dassler joined the business, and Dassler
Brothers Shoe Factory was formed. Later, the two began to provide
athletes with their running shoes. One of the most notable
athletes was Jesse Owens, who wore the shoes during the 1936
Summer Olympics, in which he won 4 gold medals. In 1947, the
brothers broke up and formed separate companies. Rudi created
Puma, and Adi went on to create Adidas. The name was created from
his first and last name. On August 18, 1949, the company was
registered as Adidas AG.
